Hon. Laʻaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt is the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Samoa, recognized as the founder of the FAST party and a pivotal figure in Samoa's modern democratic transition.

Biography

Early Life and Education

Hon. Laʻaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt was born on April 14, 1966, in Samoa. He is the son of the late Polataivao Fosi Schmidt, a legendary figure in Samoan politics and a founding member of the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP). Before entering public service, Schmidt established himself as a successful businessman, managing various family enterprises and trade interests. His early exposure to the intricacies of Samoan political life and traditional matai structures prepared him for a significant role in the nation's governance.

Political Rise and Leadership

Schmidt was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Samoa in 2006, representing the Gagaʻifomauga No. 3 constituency. He served as Deputy Speaker and subsequently as the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016. In 2020, he founded the Faʻatuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi (FAST) party, which emerged as a formidable challenger to the decades-long rule of the HRPP. His strategic leadership and grassroots popularity were instrumental in the party's historic victory during the 2021 general elections, where he initially served as Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries.

Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs

Following a period of internal political shifts and a subsequent general election in 2025, Laʻauli Leuatea Schmidt was sworn in as the 8th Prime Minister of Samoa on September 16, 2025. In accordance with established practice in Samoa, he also assumed the portfolio of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade. His administration has focused on revitalizing the national economy post-pandemic, strengthening maritime security, and enhancing Samoa's leadership within the Blue Pacific continent through active engagement in the Pacific Islands Forum.

Diplomatic Role and Achievements

As Samoa's top diplomat, Prime Minister Schmidt has emphasized the 'Blue Pacific' identity and the importance of regional solidarity in the face of climate change. He has represented Samoa at the United Nations General Assembly and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings, advocating for the interests of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). His policies prioritize sustainable trade, increased labor mobility for Samoan citizens in Australia and New Zealand, and the preservation of Samoa’s cultural heritage on the global stage.
